Network of 300 Black Leaders and OneUnited Bank Calls for Black People to Live Own Vote and Excel (L.O.V.E.)

In celebration of Juneteenth (Freedom Day), BMe Community, OneUnited Bank, and a vanguard of 300 Black leaders are urging organizations, community leaders, and citizens to formally declare their support for Black people to Live, Own, Vote and Excel in America. Committing to this Agenda for Black L.O.V.E. is a constructive step forward following weeks of civil unrest amidst a global pandemic, say the organizers.

“When you look up from the smoldering ashes of our grief and rage, you’ll see that supporting the movements for Black Lives, Black Ownership, Black Voting and Black Excellence is how we build Black L.O.V.E. in America” explains Trabian Shorters, CEO and Founder of BMe Community. “Doing nothing, changes nothing. So people who read this will declare their intentions either way.”

Supporters for this Agenda for Black L.O.V.E. can sign-up in seconds at www.NextNarrative.net where they’ll be added to notification lists for well-vetted opportunities to support collective actions, as well as receive opportunities to improve their own abilities to Live, Own, Vote and excel. OneUnited Bank, the nation’s largest Black-owned bank, was among the first to sign on to the Black L.O.V.E. Agenda.

“Black buying power in America today is over $1.2 trillion dollars,” says Teri Williams, President & COO of OneUnited Bank. “OneUnited supports L.O.V.E. because Black America must use their spending power to buy homes and own businesses to build generational wealth and leave a legacy for their children.”

Though timely, this Agenda for Black L.O.V.E began forming in 2018, when BMe Community started annually polling and interviewing Black leaders to unearth their top cultural, economic, and political priorities for Black people. The group then compiled the list of findings into four types of actions.

  • Live. Prioritize the value of Black lives, mental, physical and spiritual health, and heritage.
  • Own. Increase financial literacy, asset-ownership, and creation of generational wealth.
  • Vote. Remove barriers to voting, end corrupt policing and turnout the Black vote and census.
  • Excel. Amplify narratives that make it impossible to ignore Black excellence.

Participation in the Agenda for Black L.O.V.E. is open to people and organizations of all races. Organizations, leaders, and citizens can declare their support for these principles at www.NextNarrative.net. The website details ways to participate in collective actions that make a difference, collaborate with leaders and organizations on the front lines, and access opportunities to improve Black people’s rights to Live, Own, Vote and Excel.

A youth advocate, she launched Building Young Entrepreneurs in 2013 – a summer program helping teens start their own business. Lakeitha came on board with BMe Community as the Marketing Director in January of 2018.
