Jasahn M. Larsosa is an accomplished facilitator and community organizer, newspaper contributor, political consultant, proud Brother of the Skillman-funded BMe community and Focus: HOPE’s first Director of Advocacy, Equity & Community Empowerment. Founded in 1968 as a response to Detroit’s 1967 civil unrest, the mission of Focus: HOPE remains overcoming racism, poverty and injustice and building a metropolitan community where all people can live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection. When the strategic planning processes in Focus: HOPE’s 50th year lifted up a clear need for the organization to double down on race work in new ways, the office of Advocacy, Equity & Community Empowerment was created to lead Focus: HOPE into preeminence in this arena by successfully advocating for systems change and by modeling race equity through its integration into every aspect of activity. Larsosa was the chief architect of this division and is founding director. Larsosa was born in Detroit and educated in Detroit Public Schools. He completed his undergrad in Communication and Counseling Psychology at Ball State University before cofounding and serving as Chief Organizer of This Hood of Ours, Inc., a former Michigan nonprofit devoted to developing community leadership to build collective power and drive change in communities of color. Larsosa is also a former officer of the project management company, Larsosa Management Services, which provides a wide range of consulting to nonprofit, political, public and private agencies. He serves on a number of committees and boards and consults the national group The Bail Project. Larsosa attributes his involvement with Focus: HOPE to its mission and the opportunities it affords to great people who have been excluded from prosperity. Larsosa is grateful to have overcome the challenges of his own youth. He attributes his achievements to exceptional mentors and himself mentors men and women to advance their careers and enrich their lives. He resides on the west side of Detroit with his wife; three creative, smart and beautiful daughters and two puppies in a beautiful redbrick home where his family is highly active in the neighborhood and is a pillar in the community.
