At a very young age Nikia Kigler had the opportunity to travel and interact with people from different backgrounds which greatly impacts her work and personal desire to continue exploring and learning through others. Her art is birthed through experimentation and created with on the spot decision making and initial responses to her environment, emotions, or circumstances. Find objects layered on top of handwritten text within large scale mixed media pieces or looking at a simplified representation of a human emotion.<!--EndFragment-->Nikia moved to Baltimore, Maryland and received her BFA in General Fine Arts with a double concentration in Photography and Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art. While at MICA she attended The AICAD New York Studio Program, traveled to Jamaica for a summer intensive program. The Galerie Myrtis, The Maryland State Arts Council, Second Chance Inc., Johns Hopkins University, Peabody Institute, and Georgetown University are some of the locations where her work has been shown in the DMV area. Her passion to teach in nontraditional spaces and encouraging healing through the art is why she began her ART Inside/Out prison art program. She now lives in the Washington D.C. metro area and continues to create and motivate her students.
